American Red Cross Lifeguard Recertification Course taught by certified instructor. All classes are held at the RA pools.
Participants are encouraged to complete the blended learning as a refresher prior to attending class. A link to the blended learning will be provided upon registration.

Prerequisites: must have current or no more than 30 days expired American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification.
Class will meet at pool location. Certifications earned are valid for 2 years.

Prerequisites: must be 15 years or older by last day of class, 300 yard continuous swim in front crawl or breaststroke, two minutes of treading water without use of hands, and retrieval of 10 pound object from 7+ feet of water.

The Reston Association offers a Fairfax County approved Pool Operator License Exam. After registering to take the exam, you will receive the self-study guide.
The exam will be held in-person at RA Headquarters. Participants must bring their own laptop to the testing site. Wifi is available.
The synchronous exam is open book and you are permitted 1 hour to finish. You must achieve 90% to pass.

Ages 16+
Operator License card will be issued upon successful completion of the course.
This license is valid for 3 years at any pool within Fairfax County.

This class is designed to orient students to the aquatic environment. Instruction is given in breath control, floating, kicking, arm actions, and of course, water safety is emphasized. All skills are completed with assistance and support. Student must be able to participate in a group setting. The following skills should be mastered before moving on to the next level.

-Safely enter and exit water
-Blowing bubbles 3 seconds with mouth and nose fully submerged
-Submerging face repeatedly
-Flutter kick on front and back, 2 body lengths
-Float with recovery
-Front and back glides, 2 body lengths with recovery
-Roll from front to back or back to front
-Arm and hand treading action (in chest-deep water)
-Arms–front crawl, 2 body length
-Finning and “tickle, T, pull” arms on back, 2 body lengths

Students continue to work on submersion skills including floating and gliding on their fronts and backs independently. Students begin to develop the front and back crawls, and treading water. Prerequisite: Student must comfortably submerge face and blow bubbles multiple times and enjoy it! The following skills should be independently demonstrated before moving on to the next level:

-Enter and exit water safely
-Jump into chest deep water, unassisted
-Submerge face/head and recover object from bottom–two times
-Bob five times with rhythmic bubble blowing
-Submerge face in water for at least 3 seconds while blowing bubbles with nose and mouth
-Kick on front and back with support(3-5 body lengths)
-Front and back floats with head in proper position and ability to stay floating w/o support
-Gliding on front and back with recovery
-Roll from front to back and back to front without support
-Change direction while swimming on back and front
-Front crawl 3-5 body lengths
-Swim on back, 3-5 body lengths
-Elementary backstroke arms or finning, 3 body lengths
-Introduce back crawl arms, supported/guided by the instructor
-Treading using arm and leg actions, 15 seconds in shoulder-deep water

Students perform all shallow water skills independently and with confidence while being introduced to deep water skills. The following skills should be mastered before moving on to the next level:

-Safely enter/exit water by jumping from the side into deep water
-Bobbing while moving towards safety in chest-deep water
-Retrieve multiple objects underwater in chest-deep water
-Push off in a streamlined position on front and back, then begin flutter kicking, 3-5 body lengths
-Elementary backstroke kick
-Breaststroke kick
-Rotary breathing, 10 times
-Front crawl, 15 yds
-Elementary backstroke, 10 yds
-Back crawl arms, 5 yds

Students will work on technical Improvement of strokes while increasing their endurance in the water by practicing and refining the front and back crawls, elementary backstroke, and breaststroke. Diving skills are introduced. The majority of this class is conducted in deep water. The following skills should be mastered before moving on to the next level:

-Swim underwater, 3-5 body lengths
-Front crawl, 25 yds with rotary breathing
-Back crawl and elementary backstroke, 25 yds each
-Breaststroke kick, 15 yds– emphasis on knee position and effective propulsion
-Full breaststroke, 15 yds
-Tread water, 1 minute
-Dolphin kick, 15 yds (emphasis on keeping legs together)
-Front crawl bilateral breathing drills
-Sitting, kneeling, and standing dives

Students will increase endurance and continue to refine their strokes while becoming more efficient swimmers over greater distances. Open turns, flip turns, and racing dives are taught. The following are additional skills participants will learn:

-Circle swimming, surface dives, racing dives
-Open turns and flip turns
-Butterfly arms, kick, and timing, 15 yds
-Front crawl with bilateral breathing, 50 yds
-Breaststroke, back crawl, and elementary backstroke, 50 yds each
-Standard sculling, 30 seconds
-Tread water, 2 minutes
-Sidestroke is introduced

Ages: 18 to 36 months, parental involvement

Develops swimming readiness by teaching water entry, bubble blowing, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration and basic water safety skills.

'Toddler and Me' classes are available in four and eight lesson increments. If you chose 4 lessons, the student may attend any 4 dates within the 2-week session.
