Each program includes fun and educational activities such as short exploratory hikes, simple nature crafts and entertaining stories based around a different seasonal theme or featured animal. Adult volunteers are invited to explore Reston's natural areas and help gather information about the wildlife species that share our community. Basic training in wildlife identification and count methods is provided at the optional classes, which precede count days.

Bring the whole family for an evening of good old fashioned fun. Relax by the flickering flames, smell the woodsmoke, and enjoy a fireside program led by a naturalist from the Walker Nature Center. There is no better place to feel the warmth of camaraderie. All are friends who gather around a campfire. S'mores or other campfire treats provided. Meet a creative cast of characters, including some real animals, along our nature-themed Trick-or-Treat Trail and inside our decked-out Halloween House. Enjoy apple cider, popcorn and games. Children and adults are encouraged to wear non-scary costumes. This is NOT a horror show or a haunted house, but does include sound and light effects.

Recommended for ages 3 years and older. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult at all times. Park on Glade Drive. Bring a flashlight and an umbrella in the event of rain.

Join the fun along our woodland trail and see the Nature Center decked out for the holidays. There will be live holiday music, hot cocoa and cookies for all. Enter the Gingerbread Contest or just vote for your favorite. Search for hidden tomtes (gnomes), enjoy the storybook trail, play a carnival style game for a prize, and make an ornament. Visit with the Nature Center animals and meet our mascots. Nature Center merchandise will be on sale for stocking stuffers and gifts.

OPTIONAL GINGERBREAD CONTEST: Before the event, create a gingerbread style display with a nature theme. Work on your project solo or with friends/family. Name your creation and drop it off at the Nature Center (Nov. 27–Dec. 1, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (closed on Tuesday), Sat. Nov. 25 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Sun. Nov. 26 1-4 p.m.). Pickup will be December 6-12. Materials may include gingerbread, graham crackers, fondant, candies, natural materials (ex. pinecones, stones, acorns), and recycled materials (ex. cardboard, egg cartons, bottle caps). At the end of the event, prizes will be awarded in three categories—Best Nature Scene, Best Reston Animal(s) and the People’s Choice Award (i.e. the crowd favorite). Winners will be notified by email.
